Tough Mudder is based on teamwork which a lot of the time means training together before the event. In these difficult times when we have to stay at home we have to find different ways to connect with people virtually and train as a team remotely rather than seeing them face to face. Home workouts are the new norm which, when you are doing them alone, can be difficult to keep motivated for. To make sure you’re keeping your team accountable and having fun together we’ve pulled together our favourite at home workout ideas so that can keep up with your team, physically and mentally.
Get Organised
Jump on a video chat with your team and talk about what you want you to achieve before your Tough Mudder event. This could be focus on core exercises or cardio or even aim to increase full-body strength. It’s good to remember that not everyone will be at the same level of fitness however most exercises can be modified to suit all levels. We recommend creating a one month exercise plan that everyone can write or print out and stick on their fridge. If you need inspiration head to the Tough Mudder training section for lots of exercise inspo.
Virtual Fitness
The internet is full of online workouts – pilates, yoga, HIIT you name it you can find it. We even came across some great 80’s aerobics workouts which will have you sweating and laughing all at the same time. It’s great to have these workouts in your training schedule, they add variety and can be enjoyed together when you train as a team remotely. This is the time to do a beginner class in something that you have never done before, you never know you may just love it. Set up a virtual meeting with your team so everyone can see each other sweating it out on the screen – this also makes people accountable to attend the class rather than staying on the couch
Bring the Obstacles to You
The current climate is an unsettling and stressful one so as a team we should try and keep things light and fun while we are training. Video challenges are an excellent way of doing this. Why not see if you can recreate elements of your favourite Tough Mudder obstacles at home and get your teammates to video themselves having a go. It could be the Arctic Enema ice bucket challenge, or what about the Kiss of Mud commando crawl? Get those creative juices flowing and see who can come up with the best challenge. Create a leaderboard and get the team to rank the challenges they have enjoyed the most.
The Breakfast Club
Diet is tough to manage when we’re at home all the time, so close to a fridge or the biscuit tin. We often forget the foods we should be eating to help boost our training such as muscle recovery foods or high protein snacks as the easy option is a chocolate bar or a packet of crisps. Bring your team together with a weekly breakfast meeting. This will continue to connect your team and highlights the importance of breakfast and diet. If you are looking for team breakfast ideas our friends at Lidl have created some great breakfast smoothie bowl recipes, a delicious alternative to a bowl of cereal or eggs on toast.
